Why 1450 ppm Fluoride Matters for Children Aged 6+
UK NHS guidance (Delivering Better Oral Health, 4th edition, Office for Health Improvement & Disparities) recommends 1450 ppm fluoride toothpaste for children aged 6 years and over — the age when permanent adult teeth begin emerging and need full-strength fluoride protection. Toothpastes formulated for younger children (such as Colgate Little Kids Smiles 3+) contain lower fluoride levels suitable for milk teeth and lower swallowing risk. By age 6, most children can rinse and spit reliably, making the step up to 1450 ppm safe and clinically appropriate. Schools, NHS Paediatric Departments and Local Authority Tooth-Brushing Programmes specifically request 1450 ppm formulations for primary-school-age children for this reason.
Why Colour-Change Technology Encourages Better Brushing
One of the biggest challenges in children's oral health is brushing time — most children brush for under 60 seconds when the recommended duration is 2 minutes. Colgate Big Kids Smiles uses Colour-Change Technology where the foam turns visibly blue during brushing, giving children a fun visual cue that they have brushed for long enough. This technology converts a chore into a small game, increasing brushing duration without parental nagging. For Schools, Nurseries and NHS Tooth-Brushing Programmes running supervised brushing sessions, the colour change makes monitoring effective brushing much easier across multiple children at once.
How to Use
Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on a soft-bristled children's toothbrush. Brush twice daily, morning and night, for 2 minutes — until the foam turns blue. Always supervise children's brushing and ensure they spit out the toothpaste after brushing to minimise swallowing. Do not rinse mouth heavily after brushing, as this washes away the protective fluoride. Suitable for children aged 6 years and over.
